What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is the study of how the stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum work. It also includes the study of the pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. This area of medicine involves a detailed understanding of how these organs normally function, including how food moves through the stomach and intestine, how nutrients are absorbed into the body, and how waste is eliminated from the system.

What does a Gastroenterologist do?

The doctor you need for all your digestive ailments is a gastroenterologist. They have dedicated training and unique experience in managing diseases that affect the gastrointestinal tract or liver, and they complete at least three years of internal medicine school before an additional 2 to 4 years specializing in fellowship programs!

How do I know If I need a GI (Gastroenterologist) ?

Have you been experiencing symptoms of gas, bloating and constipation? Or do your diarrhea or cramping abdominal pain distract from daily life activities. You’re not alone! There could be an underlying medical condition causing these issues – have any blood tests been done recently to rule out colorectal cancer as well?

Have you had your colonoscopy?
